Budget phones have become more powerful and efficient in ever way possible. Huawei’s sister company Honor has launched Honor play which has the latest chipset “Hi-silicon Kirin 970” from the home company. Hi-silicon kirin 970 is a premium chipset used in Huawei mobiles such as the p20 pro. Its the latest processor from the Chinese tech giant. Honor play is a premium smartphone which comes in 4 and 6 gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of storage which is priced at 19999 INR and 23999 INR respectively. This phone has a flawless design and it looks similarly to the p20 pro from Huawei.
Honor Play stays unique from the rest of the flagships and every other other phone from Honor as it abandons the glass back panel. Instead, it has a metal body with a matte finish on the rear. Despite a neat and impressive look, It just doesn’t compromise on the design quality. Its quite slim and feels premium. But its also pretty sure now most of the smartphones have this type of design and there’s no more premium essence in it. It’s compromised…
There are two visible antennas for the mobile communications and it also has the fingerprint sensor on its rear just like the Xaomi’s note 5 pro. Although the phone has a larger display it still fits in one’s hand just perfectly as it should.
While coming to the display, you have the familiar notch cut-out at the top housing the selfie camera lens and sensor, and earpiece. The smartphone features a 6.2-inch Full HD+ display with 19:9 aspect ratio. There’s no much impressions on the lcd panels made by huawei and honor. It’s just that it’s not that bright enough. It just has IPS LCD capacitive touch screen (16M colors). IPS display technology is 6 to 7 years old but since this is a budget phone, the consumers have to compromise on this one.
The chassis is just amazing as it should be, the volume keys and the power button on the left side. At the bottom you’ll find the 3.5mm jack and the type-c connector. The 3.5mm jack is a bonus to many and also the type-c connector is just 2.0.
The software is where the brand Huawei excels and is unique. It has its own User Interface(UI) called EMUI (EMOTION USER INTERFACE). It lets the user play with UI and edit in as many ways possible. Honor play runs on Android Oreo 8.1 with the custom EMUI 8.2 layered on top of it. The phone is infused with AI as the company likes to say, and this is one which caters to user experience.
The Kirin 970 chipset has a new core for AI (Artificial Intelligence). This AI is mostly noticeable in the camera app. It identifies various scenes and gives out the best picture.
Performance is something that can only be fully tested and talked about in our detailed review. Honor Play is powered by the same Kirin 970 processor available in the Honor 10. The Honor Play will launch with the much talked about GPU Turbo out-of-the-box. Honor says that GPU Turbo will improve graphic performance by 60% and save battery by 30%.
This feature is concentrated for gaming with optimisation for the popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Honor promises lower drops in frame rates while gaming in comparison to other flagship smartphones. Honor says that unlike China, the company will not be pushing this phone as a gaming smartphone. The GPU Turbo is at present optimised for gaming only.
